Snow Day, Catching Up

Well, we finally got a bit of snow this season. Not much, more than anything it was wet and icy; but it is a good excuse to stay inside and catch up on things. Yesterday I got my geek on and upgraded my machines installing new RAM (6GB in each, zoom zoom!) and updating to OS X Lion.

Things are mostly the same on the drawing board, they haven't changed dramatically.

But as of very recently I got in my head that some things wouldlook better with a bit of embroidery on them. So I've started teaching myself how to embroider with the help of You Tube. I love the internet! Not too bad for just winging it freehand for the first time...

And I recently took a trip to visit my Grandparents and help them out a bit (more so than I initially thought).

Here are a few pet portraits I did over the holiday season, which I couldn't share until they made their way to their respective recipients.

Monday, October 10, 2011Sometimes We Need to be Reminded...

How often do your non-artist friends and colleagues offer to hang your work up somewhere - a place of business, a home, a restaurant - just so you can "get exposure"? How many times a year are you, as an artist, asked to donate your work to charity? For the most part, those doing the asking have only our best interest at heart, and it's not their fault that they don't understand how expensive it is to be an artist.

Artists are the among the most generous people in the world. We work for free all the time. We volunteer at local art spaces. We donate our work to arts organizations, non-profits, health organizations, and outreach - even though we can't deduct the price of the work on our taxes. Many of us work long hours to pay our bills and work long hours in our studios, which require a monthly rent. And don't get me started on the cost of art supplies.

Sometimes, enough is enough. It's okay to say no thanks, especially when an opportunity is costly to you - in time, effort, and funds - and isn't going to lead to future opportunities.

I think it's important to remember the time, effort, skill, knowledge, and funds it takes when approaching anyone (be it artist, doctor, lawyer, etc) about anything (be it art and design work, "can you look at this mole?", legal advice, etc). Remember to value their WORK even if they love what they do. It still took them a while (time, funds, learned skills, etc) to get there and that's it why you are asking THEM specifically and not a random stranger off the street - who would almost certainly tell you "NO!". Personally I have a hard time saying No, I feel like a super crabby Bitch (yes, capital B) for saying it even though I know I shouldn't feel guilty at all. "Expanding my portfolio" does not pay my bills, put food in my mouth, or gas in my car. Being an artist means you are most likely working at least 2 jobs, the one that pays the bills and the one that mostly subtracts money from your bank account (that would be the art making one...). Time is precious and tomorrow is never promised.

If you can't pay me in legal tender for my work... I propose bartering! Remember the days when goods and services were traded for other goods and services of equal value? We never needed mega corps, or child labor sweatshops in far off lands, or worried about loss of jobs; because everyone needed everyone else in town to do what what they were GOOD at, so they could get the things they NEEDED. Since the items were being made by people who were GOOD at what they did, they had taken time to hone this skill or craft, they probably CARED about it, and made things WELL and with INTENTION. And well, if you took out a loan that you couldn't pay for... and you probably knew better than that... then the debt collector just took out your legs or took one of your children (that you hardly fed anyway) for menial labor to pay off your debt. Life was so SIMPLE.

Necky Situations

Hey Folks, I know I am super behind on posting, but let me make it up to you....Here is a quick update on the neck & back situation: I'm feeling WAY better.Most days I am pretty much pain free. And some days I feel just a little ache or I get a little stiff sometimes; but I have a much greater awareness of where it is in my body and what I was doing that probably triggered it . Generally it is from being stressed out and hunched over or sitting in odd positions for a long time. I've also come to terms that milk/dairy products make me feel like poop in many ways. If I put half and half in my coffee I know I will have a small flash of a headache across my forehead somewheres around mid-day and that the next day I will feel like I am coming down with a cold. In fact the more dairy I ingest the worse of an oncoming cold it feels like I'm getting the next morning. It really sucks because I really like cheese and my friend runs the best pizza joint in Baltimore so I spend a lot of time there. And dammit, nothing replaces cream or half and half in coffee or cheese! But I digress on other pains, back to the back... I am now on my 50 something-th of 65 treatments and I am going 3 days a week to adjustments and traction while working 4 days a week at the school. I sit a whole lot straighter most of the time. I've had to readjust the rear view mirror in my car (because I sit taller) and now can tell if its been a long day I'm slouching and can't see out the back so then I realize what I'm doing and readjust my body. I FEEL TALLER! I've taken the feather bed off of my bed (I have to say this was a sad night) and if my back is twinge-y I roll over onto my back (I'm a side sleeper) and can literally feel and hear it pop back into place. I've always had a "crunchy" back that snap, crackles, and pops, but I learned that it is not really a bad thing, just means that it moves easily. I've learned to find my zen while in traction I'll close my eyes and fall asleep with weights hanging off the back of my head and neck or with my butt hoisted in the air. It's really interesting that most of the other people I see there can't put the phone down and usually are still straining their necks to type, talk, or watch something on their phones while in traction (which is supposed to help straighten things out). Or how many of them think they know better than the Dr. and will try to say what they do or don't need- this always baffles me and I always want to ask them "Did you go to school for chiropractic care? Pass any medical exams? Because I'm pretty sure you didn't... and therefore you should not be making medical diagnoses or deciding your own treatment plan!". I also notice they don't have the same miraculous recovery that I had in 30 some treatments... hmm could there be a correlation between following the prescribed exercises and treatments and actual recovery? I want to get better and I follow the steps that will mostly likely get me there. Clearly that would just make too much sense to be true... Right? Anyway I've kinda come to look forward to finding my little zen-ness and actually get pretty disappointed if I don't fall asleep in traction.Here is my neck in its current situation (red line) from September around the 30th visit, we are talking about being a whole lot less hurt-y.Here is my neck (red line) in June against what it was supposed to look like (green line). At this point I kept finding myself saying " I want to stab my neck with a fork" I still don't understand how that was going to make it feel better - other than being a new distraction that it now had holes in it....I am so happy my neck no longer looks and feels like this.

Gee wiz I can't believe we are bordering on August here already, it has gone by so fast. Sometimes I feel so harried that I feel as though the summer hasn't even started yet its almost over! The official school year ended mid June for the children but I've been plugging away at the school office a little bit each week. I've been house and roommate hunting (unsuccessfully) since the end of the school year. Also trying to get back into better shape so the pup and I have been spending a good amount of time walking. And mostly I've been busy with my summer project of fixing my neck/spine, yeah.... old lady problems at the ripe age of 25.

Here's the story on that... Shortly before the end of the school year I went in for an xray and some chiropractic adjustments. I'd been having crazy headaches, neck and upper back pain for a few months, my acupuncture was subduing them immediately but not for the few weeks in between my monthly sessions. I thought I'd just need 1-5 sessions to pop everything back into place and I'd be good as new, I really wasn't ready for what they had to show me... Basically my head was sticking way far out in front of the rest of my spine looking more like a backslash \ than the shallow ideal C which allows the weight of your skull to balance properly and efficiently over top of your shoulders and spine. Instead my head was a full 21 cm or 8 inches out of place! I'd lost 63% of curve in my neck. I fell off a lot of horses when I was younger (its a part of the sport, learning to dust ones self off,get back on, and carry on), I have terrible posture since I stopped riding (I'm not longer being judged on my "position" and lost a lot of those awesome core muscles), I spend too much time at the desk, I spend too much time hunched over a computer and or laptop, I have large "objects" attached to my chest, and they all multiplied on one another. I was having these fog inducing headaches more days than not that would leave me useless by mid afternoon or evening, sometimes I wanted to throw up, my back and neck hurt so bad I kept wanting to "stab it with a fork" as if that would some how fix or distract me from it. I've had mild to moderate back aches and pains for many many years that it just seemed like my "normal", I have a fairly high pain tolerance, and mostly I was just so used to it it didn't even register as something is wrong with me or that THIS IS NOT NORMAL. So I was really shocked when they told me that yeah pretty much you've already started to do a little damage and we can't reverse the damage, but we can put you back into the proper positions so that you don't continue to hurt yourself. I cried when I saw my xrays, visions of my grandfather whose shoulders were higher than his ears flashed in my head; and I resolved right there to fix my neck to the tune of an estimated 65 visits and $1,800 (after insurance pays out their part). It stings a bit, particularly since I've been trying to save up to move back to the city and my summer work pays pennies... But my health is really important to me and I'm committed to fixing myself up right (no pun intended). Now I'm almost mid way in my treatments and in a few weeks I can get another xray to see the progress I've made and determine how and if things should change in treatment. I have to say that I've only had about 3 headaches in over a month. Where as I used to be lucky if I had 3 days free of headaches a the course of a week! I'm feeling VASTLY better, and really excited to see my 2nd set of xrays.

I've mostly been shuttling myself back and forth between morning visits with the chiropractor (4 days a week!), the office(work), errands, house/housemate searching ( which has not been going well), and hiking/walking with the dog everyday. The writing bug has been crawling around inside of me again but I haven't really settled in with it or decided the best way to get it all out. I took a trip last weekend to Albany NY which then also included stops in Bennington VT (for breakfast!), North Adams MA (for the art museum MASS MoCA), and Cornwall-on-Hudson NY (how could I not stop in my favorite town), it was a whirlwind of fun. It was too hot to lug a camera around so I only have photos on my phone.

Art making has mostly been slow the exception of some painting projects. I started off on my bike painting project with the intent that it was going to be a really simple paint job. But once I started I got kind of carried away and ended up doing 5 colors plus gloss in a koi pattern. A lot of people asked me why I was painting my bike, I didn't really have a good answer other than 'why not?' and that I wanted to learn more about my bike. There are at least two layers of each color and long dry times in between. I'm still struggling with getting the gearing and braking together. Afterwards, I liked my bike paint job so much I painted my mail box in a very similar theme but with a black base!

Life's been good besides the janky neck. I know I need to post some new stuff in the Etsy shop. Now would be a really great time to purchase something if you've been holding off...

New Listings

Hey there, check out 12 new listings in the Etsy Shop!!!

I love making art, but I dread the posting and listing process. Sometimes it feels rather defeating when I think about the process...

It takes an absolute minimum of a full day (but usually a full day and a half or a full two days of working) to photograph items, edit photos/ scale them for the web, write listings, figure out pricing and mailing, and post the actual listings on Etsy, then make announcement posts on Facebook, Flickr, and Blogger about said new items. And then everyone involved (Pay Pal, Etsy, Square, etc...) takes their cut, a 3-6% each for each sale made. I suppose this is why people hire agents or sign up with a gallery (and yet these guys and gals take an even bigger chunk, more like 30-60%). But everyone's gotta make a buck, and without the Pay Pals, the Etsy, and the Square Ups of the world it'd be even harder to get my work out there and get paid. So I suppose I am stuck in the cycle.

This week I took a personal day to keep on pressing on. I got up at 6:30 am and worked till 6:30 pm. It was WONDERFUL! The same day an old friend contacted me about purchasing a drawing. Its a drawing that I've always liked a lot, I'm sad to see it go but know it will be in very good hands. Maybe it was pure coincidence but it also felt like here I was taking the time to do my thing and the universe was rewarding me and telling me to keep on keeping on. I'm going to use the drawing sale to purchase a roof rack for my car so I'm one step closer to realizing my kayak dream*!(when one doesn't live on the water one must have transportation for said boat!* I am trying to fund my entire kayak dream purchase through the sale of my art)

This week I've gone to town making buntings and flags. I've had this idea and paper (specifically for it) sitting around for probably about a good 4-5 months but haven't gotten around to sitting down to do it. I'm really pleased with them! A few will be gifts and many of them will be coming to the Etsy store soon.

I've officially run out of wall space

I’ve officially run out of wall space in my basement. Which is making it hard to clear the drawing board to start new work. I needed some time off from the two large drawing I was working on decided to do two fast drawings which were only supposed to take a weekend or two. But then I took a weekend or two off of those drawing as well, and so here they finally are.

I think I could really use few days off to get back into doing some good stuff. Dropped over a hundred dollars on a roll of rives BFK paper a few weeks ago. Get ready for some big stuff come! (if I can find room for it !)

April Rains

It's spring break baby and I'm getting serious.

Registered for my very on tax ID number, business credit card, and just got Squared Up (I can start taking on the spot credit card swipe payments through my phone)! So my taxes are about to get way more complicated and yeah you're gonna have to pay your 6% sales taxes, but I'm getting legit. Its time to say I'm serious about this and forge forwards.

Oh yeah, Spring sale in the Etsy shop starting Monday April 25th. It's also a I'm moving back to the city sale! Need to raise some funds and lighten the moving load.

Today I put in some time with the large drawings.

... mostly the bonfire/campfire one. I added some new elements to the drawing, which I think awakens the composition. My dog might want to get in on this one, but I have to shore up somethings in the drawing first before I make that decision.

I also liked this doodle I did today of seating options.

Today I also went back to this old drawing, there was something that always felt unfinished with this drawing, and erased the figure and dog leaving the ghost images and the shadows. I like it much better. The drawing is titled Loitering because it always reminded me of this quote:

"We should be blessed if we lived in the present always, and took advantage of every accident that befell us, like the grass which confess the influence of the slightest dew that falls upon it; and did not spend our time in atoning for the neglect of past opportunities, which we call doing our duty. We loiter in winter while it is already spring."- Henry David Thoreau.

I think the ghosted image resonates even more with the quote than before.

...and then I goofed around with the pup.

Despite having a fabulous hair day I think I might have caught a cold. bummer.

Marching on

I've been marching onwards working on those two drawings that were started in Dec. Hope to finish them this month or early April more likely, trouble is making decisions...

Woking on some small paper and stamp collages; for fun, for gifts, for thanks...

Spring's new energy has been bubbling up, March has actually been great energy wise for me. I needed some changes so I got a haircut and got in touch with some of my Nordic roots... Under the influence of daylights savings Bones and I have been doing a lot more hiking. It feels really good to get back out there again, totally what I need.

Also lately I've been purchasing things made by other artists. Today I found this amazing vest. If you have any ideas of its provenance please shoot me a note I'm really curious and in love with it.

Make Happy

I've had a few inquires about the remaining sets of Windhorse prayer flags. I have to say that there is just something that does not feel right about selling them despite their cost and labor it took to make them; they were meant to be healing gifts.

This weekend I made 6 sets of paper Windhorses, one set is a little torn at the edges -so I should probably really only call it an edition of 5. I am thinking these could possibly go to the Etsy store as (indoor only) paper Windhorse flags.

With the remnants from the paper Windhorses I made 2 strands of tiny Baily bunting!

The power of ponies

There is no doubt of the great lasting impact horses have had on my own life and the influence that shows up in my art. I started riding when I was 6 years old and moved my way through the ranks paying for my own lessons with days spent working in the barn and managing a stable for a while.

That is why I was really honored and excited when I was contacted by someone from Mitey Riders (http://www.miteyriders.org/) at Mist Meadows to be one of the artists participating the auction to raise money for the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (http://www.narha.org/) to facilitate therapeutic riding programs and Special Olympics athletes.

Misty Meadows Mitey Riders ( www.miteyriders.org) is a non-profit organization offering therapeutic riding to special needs children at no cost to their families, located just outside of Charlotte, NC.

Mitey Riders is also a NARHA Premier Accredited Center for therapeutic riding – with NARHA ( www.narha.org) as our "parent" organization, and the industry leader for all equine assisted activities in the world. Each year, NARHA hosts an educational conference to expand the reach of information and inspiration to all involved in the equine assisted activities industry. This year, Mitey Riders has been asked to host the 2011 NARHA Region 3 Conference. This is a huge honor for us, not only as an organization, but as a community. The event will host 300 professionals in the education, health and equine therapy industries including instructors, directors, PTs, OTs, parents, volunteers and teachers from NC, SC, WV, VA and beyond.

So that's pretty rad. Horses have an amazing therapeutic power emotionally and physically especially for those who need a boost.

Saturday Crafternoon

My coworker and proprietor of the Little Red House, in Hamilton area, invited me over for a Valentines Crafternoon (a delightful afternoon of valentines crafting).

The room was in festive spirits and the table was prepared with crafting supplies ready for crafting. There were also valentines treats ready for munching.

I really didn't know what I was going to do for valentines this year, but somehow found my way and just started drawing simple sumi ink koi and then drawing heart spots or scales on top.

Coming back to it

This is the 3rd snow day in row, days 1&2 other than my hardcore shoveling I was pretty lazy, so today is day 3 and conveniently also Friday (Studio Day). Its time to get to work, put the charcoal to the page.Sometimes before moving forwards you gotta go backwards. Started these drawings in December and left them in the painting stage - got sidetracked in this and that. Now its time to go back to them so I can move forward. One is a multi-figure drawing (I'm so going to hate myself for this one later) and the other a fire and landscape drawing. I dunno if this is gonna get me in trouble but I gotta get on with my life and my work.

Well, I'm sad to say tonight's art opening and jazz night at the Radisson has been canceled due to the snow. (not my decision and a bit of a bummer)
But I'll find out in the next week or so as to the rescheduled date and let you all know. Thank you for all your support and kind words.
As I was shoveling again today I was thinking of my homeboy Thoreau :

"Do not depend on the putty. Drive a nail home and clinch it so faithfully that you can wake up in the night and think of your work with satisfaction, - a work at which you would not be ashamed to invoke the Muse... Every nail driven should be as another rivet in the machine of the universe, you carrying on the work."

good words for everything we set out to do be it shoveling, art, or working with the children.

Handmade Holiday II

Year two of a handmade Holiday did not go as smoothly as year one. I somehow felt like I had more time to get everything ready last year, but really I just did not give myself enough time this year.

It probably didn't help that I chose a labor intensive project - making my own sets of prayer flags...

These flags were made with blood, sweat, tears, frustrations, and very good intentions. Seeing them done really fills with a sense of pride; they were worth the struggle.

They were hand torn from yards of muslin and hand dyed in buckets in the basement -and may or may not have contributed to the staining of my mother’s clothes dryer. Meanwhile the Windhorse was hand drawn and hand carved, and the laundered flags were ironed. Then the stamp was printed by hand on each flag. Lastly they were sewn by hand and strung. This long handmade process makes each flag unique.

The Windhorse is a symbol of an uplifting life force or energy of basic goodness or buddhanature and wakefulness. Printed on fluttering flags it carries our wishes with the speed of wind and the strength of a horse. On the back of the Windhorse are three wish fulfilling jewels of enlightenment bringing peace, wealth, and harmony. I drew the Windhorse in the style of a Dala Horse, which is a Scandinavian stylized horse – usually in carved wooden toy form- a joyful symbol of some of my own Nordic roots.

These flags should be hung outside so that the wind and natural elements will spread your good thoughts, fortunes, and prayers. Ideally they are hung on a windy day, but any day is a good day as long as it done with a clear and open heart. The natural elements will eventually take their toll on the flags and this is to reminds us of the impermanence of life. You can replace them with new ones and burn the old ones or let nature run its full course.

A small edition of 25 calendars were printed on heavy glossy card stock and wire bound. $15* includes one calendar and one postcard and 5% of the sale goes to Scenic Hudson land preservation. Additional postcards are $1*. All other moneys go to paying gas and tolls so I can keep driving up and taking photos. Bailey and I are also saving up to get our own kayak... This will also be the final printing, no more calendars will be made after these are gone.

I finally finished carving and just started printing these bad boys.

Huzzah! 7X10 inches of lino cut loveliness. I think this is my favorite lino cut I've done to date. Its actually meant to be 2 prints (folded for card or cut center fold to frame) but passable as one image if you aren't eying it too hard. Bailey is my print production manager...

I feel like I am overdue for working on a drawing, but I haven't wanted to start anything in part because of what a mess charcoal makes of everything and how it finds it way onto every object in the basement in a superfine layer of black dust, and the amount of sewing (aka ultra clean) projects I have on my table like the Windhorse prayer flags and a coat for Bailey. In the meantime in addition to my larger linocut I've been working on a few smaller and quicker reliefs/ stamps "don't stop BELIEVing" and "you better BohLEIVE it, Hon!" which go very nicely with my Mr. Boh stamp. I was feeling a little down tonight so I made myself a little pick-me-up (had myself a little mini project).

...its a hand carved Mr. Boh stamp! Mr. Boh is a trademark of National Bohemian Beer (a.k.a. Natty Boh or just Boh) once proudly brewed in Baltimore, he's a bit of an icon around these parts, and I've always just admired him as handsome little devil and a great piece of design/marketing.

This weekend I've made some good progress on my Windhorse project.

I finished the dying process - the blue had to be dyed twice.

Everything was washed sorted and ironed flat for printing.

And then began the printing, by hand, of over a hundred windhorses...

It's been far too long since I've made a post. It feels like its been far too busy with not much to show for the time. I'm currently dying a few lots of fabric and as I wait for the washer to finish rising out my colors I thought it a prime time to hop on here and say a few words as to what I've been up to lately.

As I mentioned earlier I am dying some fabric which I had torn down to create small flags.I am going to be printing these with a stamp I designed and hand carved of a Windhorse (a common Tibetan prayer flag symbol of boundless basic goodness and buddhanature) in the style of a Dala Horse (a common Swedish trinket once traded for basic goods) to be used to make my own set of prayer flags as a gift of good fortune to friends and family. Now my plan currently is to roll up in black ink and print on white, yellow, red, green, and blue flags. Previously I had tried rolling up the stamp in PVA and then Elmers to try to do a resist (think like a basic batik), but it didn't really work out. This project has been my main focus lately.

I have a few prints up in a show over at the Radisson Hotel at Cross Keys in Baltimore. Reception date to come soon!

I started receiving acupuncture this month and I've really enjoyed it- and that's coming from the kid they used to have to hold down while I screamed bloody murder at the sight of a needle.

Right before Halloween, last month, I went up to the Hudson. Oh Hudson, always beautiful, always hard to leave behind. Many more photos up at flickr.

So, I've been trying to keep myself busy with some small drawings and small lino cuts (haven't printed those yet). But I'm feeling like small paper just isn't cutting it for me. I need to go bigger, open up some space for some beings to live in and breathe in.

This Sunday, please come by the Owings Mills Farmers Market, 9a-1p, I'll have a table there with various cool things for sale like plants I've cultivated (sustainably!) in vintage pottery and glassware, stationary, and Hudson jems among other things. At least just come and say "hi", or get some good grub!

I haven't seen the river in a long time. Art making had been slowing down to a trickle, clouding over with mountainous plies of "work" work and work emails, I was hiding inside from the scorching heat, and maybe I got a bit of the hot August blues. Then last week I decided to snap out of it.

I started jotting down a phrase, quote, or thought from the day and then doing a quick little sketch to go with it. I only needed to do one to fulfill my self made rule, but I usually found myself doing more than one. And then I decided I was gonna prep some paper, damnit! And I was gonna start a linoleum print, damnit! And I was gonna start myself a whole bunch of projects! And then I found a cute little Danish mid century end table while out thrifting and I decided was gonna learn how to strip and refinish furniture too! I also made a pair buttons from shells I found on the beach last month. So, I have a bit of art ADHD at the moment, but I'd much rather have the problem of having too many projects going on than none at all.

I've been doing a bit of traveling back and forth to NY and hosting a friend in Baltimore has been a great excuse to run around everywhere to see and do lots of things I probably wouldn't have. Somewhere in between running around I managed to finish up two drawings that I had started in the winter/spring. What a great relief it is to have them done and off the drawing board.

Spent some time with family and friends.

Found this nice structure some fishermen built one day out of materials from the site. I was kinda obsessed with it's woven limbs and stones wind and view blocking structure, surrounding low stone wall, log seats, and fire pit.

It always bothered me how much paper and labor I used to waste while printing. I tried my best but there are always ones that don't make the cut or were tests. So for years I've been carrying pounds (yes, pounds) of failed prints. Yesterday I upcycled some of piles of failure into blank greeting cards and postcards. And some of them actually look better in their new cropped and folded formats

While Baltimore was being pummeled in the snow belt, my Hudson Valley friends were hardly seeing a dusting of the frozen precipitation. So, northwards I fled to escape the snow. My trip was short, delayed a day in getting up there, but still just as rewarding and sweet as always.

The Great White Sea

We broke all the old records and well maybe just this once people had a reason to go a bit bonkers about a bit of snow... Baltimore was hit with 4 feet of snow in less than a week, closed schools for a week and a half, everything was halted and everything still struggles to resume.

I've been asked to participate in the Baltimore Museum of Art's The Baltimore Fair for Contemporary Prints & New Editions. I'll be at the MICA table as an Alumni with prints and drawings. This will be my 2nd time participating at the BMA's print fair. SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, March 27 & Sunday, March 28, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. I will post more details at a later date.

Next weekend I'm going up to the Hudson River for my monthly photography trip. Hopefully the weather cooperates, seeing as how every week we've been getting one or more snow storms...

So... yesterday I was in the Baltimore Sun's Arts section cover story about Load of Fun's graffiti haven alley; to which I was supporter, advocate, organizer, and documenter for sometime. The full story can be read here

Once you've read it, I would like to point out that I would have never said there is a "right" or "wrong" way to do ANY art form, certainly there are better ways but never right or wrong, and that quote was either wrongly labeled with my name or made up. The "before and after" photos used to demonstrate what happened to the alley were my photographs, and the photos on the Load of Fun website are primarily Sherwin's not mine. There are still food wrappers etc. in the alley, it was a few packages of gummy bears that were sitting on the folding chair (I have the photo to prove it) but there is significantly less trash and less use of the alley as a place to do bad things. Good graffiti breeds more good graffiti and actually makes the space safer, wipe it out and it's a free for all for shit to happen.

In the end the more publicity for Load of Fun and alley the better.

This year I was so appalled with strangers asking me if I had finished my Christmas shopping (and just let me say this… I think there is a multitude of things wrong within that). And the past 5 months or so I've been trying to find myself a simpler more meaningful life. I wanted to give something of myself, my time, my heart, energy, personality, something that would, hopefully, actually be meaningful to the recipient. So, I decided I wouldn’t step inside at shopping mall from Thanksgiving till after New Years, and I would make all of my Christmas/ Hanukkah gifts (though I did expect to have to buy some supplies to make such gifts. And to be honest I also kind of expected myself to break it; to freak out, and at the last minute thinking that I was not giving “enough” run out and buy extra stuff.

However, I am happy to say that I stuck to my guns the whole time, and it couldn’t have been better or more rewarding. I was really proud of the things I made for the people I love. In addition to the gift making, I made cards (which I kind of consider a small gift in and of themselves). Each card was printed by hand from a hand carved linoleum block. I went back and forth on the design for considerable time, but I finally settled on an image from a sketch after returning from the Hudson: myself as a unicorn kayaker holding my paddle while my trusty dog stood, as she preferred to do so, atop the prow of the boat. I then used koi stamps, that I had carved a few years back, to print on the envelopes – each one is a little different.

I read a CNN article in which Mark Frauenfelder said:

There's a Haida Indian saying: "Joy is a well-made object equaled only to the joy of making it." To that I would add, "and to the joy of giving it away." That's because a handmade object embodies the personality of the person who made it.

And to which I say, I love it, because it is so true. It was joy to give away these labors of love to my loved ones.

Back from my weekend in NY. Sunday was the only sunny day, but it couldn't have been a lovelier day. Visited Storm King Art Center with friends, and had such an awesome time. Getaways always seem too short. And now it's back to real time and struggling with trying to get done what I have to do, so that maybe I can get back to doing what I want to do.( so far I haven't been able to get to that what I want to do bit in too long a time) Not enough hours in the day.

Things are falling in to fall quickly; the winds are picking up, the trees are blushing red, ears burning bright, and the rest are reaching out for the gold.

I've taken up a 4 day work week now, that gives me at least one day I can always dedicate to studio time. My first studio day was a bit rough, hit a rut and I ended up switching gears and working on creating a book of my photography. The book will be printed before December through Blurb. It's mainly for personal use, but a few copies will also be available for purchase.

I'm planning another short trip to the Hudson near the end of the month. The leaves should be peaking for sure by then. I really wont have another chance to get away till at least December. I am so lucky to have this opportunity available to me and I thank my lucky stars everyday for it.

Earlier this week I received the very exciting news that I was accepted to be in the audience of this year's TEDxMidAtlantic conference. Only 400 so people will be in the audience and for which I filled out an application that took me over an hour to complete. Their goal in this was to find as passionate and engaged an audience as they had speakers. I am so honored and excited for November 4th. Bonus points : it will be held at MICA and the theme is Stories!

On Saturday, November 14, I will take part in an exciting event at the Windup Space. Which will showcase the work of Dr. Bob Hieronimus and Stuart Zolotorow. Attendees will get to listen in on his personal explanation of the symbolism around us that all point to unity, balance, and connecting within. After his talk Dr. Bob and his assistants (myself included) will create a symbolic mural during the amazing musical performance by, the highly acclaimed band, Telesma. This should be a fun time, check it out if you get a chance.

single color lithograph, small editions printed on cool grey, warm grey (pictured) or white paper. This print was created in honor and memory of the late and great Dottie the "Doodle Dog" all profits from the first year of the sale of this print went to the local animal rescue Recycled Love. The profits from the 2nd year and after feed my new puppy. Wunder Dog was re printed in 3 small editons, the previous printings ( you may have seen earlier pictures) of this plate were destroyed by ink oxidations. Contact Karly ASAP for your print!
